Summary of This Book
A Journey from the Middle Ages to Today is a collection designed as a musical voyage, ideal for enriching the soprano recorder (descant) repertoire while developing musicality, style, and interpretative sense. The album gathers numerous compositions covering the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, then opens up to more modern aesthetics to keep the practice lively and stimulating.
You will find pages inspired by great names of the repertoire (including Vivaldi, Bach, Hotteterre, Dowland, Telemann, Purcell, and Handel), as well as traditional songs and thirteen original compositions by British flutist Alan Davis. This diversity allows for exploring very contrasting characters: early dances, lyrical pieces, rhythmic movements, as well as more contemporary colors with blues, jazz, and Latin influences.
The selection was made by Czech flutist Jan Kvapil, known for his recorder school methods, with particular attention to playability and technical balance. The pieces are suitable both for individual practice (intonation, articulation, phrasing) and chamber music, thanks to numerous ensemble possibilities: 2 to 3 recorders, or recorder with harmonic accompaniment.
To support learning and provide stylistic references, additional free materials are offered: 32 downloadable audio examples, allowing listening to unaccompanied or accompanied interpretations (harpsichord, piano, lute, viola da gamba, percussion), sometimes at different tempos. An excellent aid for working on attack, pulse, and ornamentation, while strengthening musical autonomy.
