Little is known about the genesis of "Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele" BWV 143. For a long time, the reading of this cantata relied on a 19th-century transcription, considered the sole source, and used as the textual basis in the "New Bach Edition." The situation changed with the appearance of a score copy dated 1762, now available and philologically much more solid.

This new source made a complete revision of the work necessary. The proposed edition is part of the "New Bach Edition - Revised" and presents the cantata in what is likely its original form: C major with three trumpets. This instrumentation option is contrasted with the version preserved in B-flat major using three horns, deemed less representative of Bach's usual writing.
