Summary of This Score

With 33 Variations on a Waltz for Piano Op. 120 "Diabelli Variations", Beethoven delivers one of the absolute pinnacles of piano literature and the art of variation. Originally, Anton Diabelli invited numerous composers from the Austrian Empire to each write a variation on his 32-measure waltz for a collective publication; Beethoven initially refused the idea before following his own path and composing a monumental cycle of 33 variations. This Urtext edition highlights a particularly complex source situation: editor Mario Aschauer presents the issues in the preface, while discrepancies between documents are made clear through light gray ossias. For the pianist, this results in a score that is both rigorous and practical, helping to work on the piece precisely without losing sight of the musical intention. Additionally, a detailed critical commentary (English) and interpretation notes on Viennese piano practice in Beethoven's time (German / English) enrich the study: a true asset for approaching the style, sound, accents, as well as the alternately virtuosic, humorous, and deeply architectural character of these variations.
