This scholarly-critical edition of String Quartet op. 127, the first of Beethoven's late quartets, continues the line of Urtext publications of opp. 18, 59, 74, and 95. The goal is clear: to provide string quartets with a reliable, coherent, and directly usable working basis for performance, free from errors and copying habits that have sometimes crept in over various editions.
Jonathan Del Mar compared all surviving sources, including sketches, to clarify contradictory readings of the autograph. This work allows for a refined restoration of elements often distorted by editorial tradition: ties and groupings, phrasing, articulations, as well as the exact length of crescendos. The edition also corrects erroneous notes found in some historical publications and fills in missing notes, enabling a more accurate interpretation of Beethoven's text.
