Composed between 1962 and 1964, PIANO SONATA NO. 4 stands as a major work in the piano repertoire of the period, both dense, transparent, and emotionally striking. Dedicated to the memory of the pianist Antonín Jemelík, who died tragically, the work bears the imprint of an intimate homage: the introduction features a brief quotation from Scriabin's Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 70, followed by a unison octave passage of striking dramatic intensity.

Formally, the sonata is conceived as a single movement but articulated in numerous clearly contrasting episodes. These segments are clearly grouped into two sections: an exposition, where the themes are presented, then a development, where the material is expanded and transformed. The composer favors concentrated thematic work, based almost exclusively on fragmentation, reduction of material, or the superimposition of several ideas, often brief but very expressive. This method, combined with a deliberately sharp execution (melodies with semitonal tendencies and strongly opposed dynamics), gives the score remarkable projection power and readability.

The work was premiered by Pavel Stepán at the Rudolfinum in Prague in 1965. The present edition is based on the only edition available so far (Panton, 1969) and has been compared with the composer's manuscript to clarify certain notation inconsistencies.
