In the spring of 1894, Johannes Brahms, who had already mentioned a kind of "retirement" from composition, regained creative momentum through his contact with clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, whose playing deeply impressed him. From this encounter were born, during the summer of 1894, two sonatas for clarinet and piano, which were later premiered by Brahms and Mühlfeld and performed several times before their first publication in June 1895.
