Summary of This Collection

With Il Pastor Fido, you hold in your hands a fascinating collection of Six Sonatas for Musette, Hurdy-gurdy, Flute, Oboe or Violin and Basso continuo, long attributed to Antonio Vivaldi. The editorial history of this collection is unique: more than 250 years after its publication, the attribution has been clarified and it is now known that the author is Nicolas Chédeville (1705-1782), a French composer who presented the work to the mid-18th century Parisian public under the prestigious name of Vivaldi.

Musically, the collection offers a true "blend": deliberately simple movements and galanteries inspired by French style coexist with more personal pages, driven by inventive writing and strong compositional ideas. Designed to meet the pastoral tastes of the time, it highlights instruments then in vogue such as the musette and hurdy-gurdy, while remaining perfectly relevant today thanks to choices of more common instruments, notably the flute, particularly suited to the rustic character suggested by the title.

This Bärenreiter Urtext edition, edited by specialist and conductor Federico Maria Sardelli, brings together the musical text of the six sonatas and valuable editorial content for working with style: a rich preface (German/English) outlining the context, inspiring elements on historically informed performance, as well as a critical report (English) explaining the editorial choices and variants adopted.
