Summary of This Score

This Piano Quintet in A major op. 5 (B 28) reveals a lesser-known facet of Antonín Dvorák: his early major chamber music works, written long before the famous Quintet op. 81. In the late 1880s, the composer revisited several youthful works composed in the 1860s and 1870s. He then asked music critic Ludevít Procházka to provide him with a handwritten copy of this quintet, composed fifteen years earlier. After thorough revision, Dvorák ultimately chose not to publish it and preferred to write a new quintet in the same key, which became opus 81.

This situation makes the manuscript copy recovered from Procházka the only known source of this work, enhancing the musicological and artistic significance of this edition. You will find a musical text established from the Complete Edition of Dvorák's works (Volume IV/11), with meticulous editorial work designed for discerning musicians and ensembles seeking repertoire off the beaten path.

Intended for practical use, this publication includes a performance score as well as a set of separate parts. The instrumentation combines piano and a string quartet (two violins, viola, cello), an ideal formation for concerts as well as conservatory study. The new detailed preface by David R. Beveridge, offered in English, Czech, and German, provides valuable insight into the composition context, source transmission, and editorial choices.
