Summary of This Score

Dvo?ák, Antonín
String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat major, Op. 51

Composed at the end of 1878, String Quartet No. 10, Op. 51 marks a turning point in Dvo?ák's chamber music: until then, none of his quartets had yet been performed, but this new work, conceived in a decidedly "Slavonic" spirit, quickly established itself on the international stage. Even today, it remains one of the composer's most appreciated quartets, both for its melodic drive and its dance-like character as well as its sense of instrumental color.

This edition is aimed at demanding instrumentalists, teachers, and libraries seeking a reference musical text. Musicologist Hartmut Schick, a recognized Dvo?ák specialist, conducted thorough collation work based on all available sources, notably the historic edition published by Simrock and the autograph manuscript. The result is a publication designed for confident reading in rehearsal and concert, with particular attention to notation details and variants.

Compared to older editions, this publication highlights a clearly audible modification in the 4th movement, specifically in the viola part, and offers particularly useful editorial documentation. The critical commentary (in English) helps to understand the editorial choices and discrepancies between sources, while the appendix gathers earlier versions of the middle movements, including alternative endings for the 2nd movement ("Dumka") and the 3rd movement ("Romance"). A detailed preface (German/Czech/English) completes the set, ideal for placing the work in context and guiding interpretative work.
