Summary of This Score
With 5 Impromptus for Piano, Gabriel Fauré brings together five major pieces from the French Romantic piano repertoire, composed during two distinct periods of his career: first between 1881 and 1883, then between 1906 and 1909. Inspired by Chopin's example, the youthful impromptus (Opp. 25, 31, and 34) combine pianistic brilliance and lyricism: their writing, sometimes close to études, gives the impression of improvisation while relying on a highly controlled, often symmetrical architecture, extended by a coda.
The two late impromptus (Opp. 91 and 102) open another perspective: the sonority broadens, the harmony becomes more daring, and the virtuosity gains density, serving a more assertive language. This Urtext edition highlights these contrasts, offering the pianist a coherent vision of Fauré's stylistic evolution, from the refined brilliance of the early pages to the bolder colors of the mature works.
Prepared by Jean-Pierre Bartoli, musicologist and professor at the Sorbonne, this edition is based on the musical text from the complete edition "OEuvres complÚtes de Gabriel Fauré " published in 2020. In addition to particularly clear engraving, it offers a preface (French/English/German), a critical commentary in English, as well as trilingual interpretation suggestions: a valuable asset for working on the style, articulation, and sound balance characteristic of Fauré's aesthetic.
