Sonata arranged for Piano and Viola invites you to rediscover one of the most beloved pieces in the chamber music repertoire: César Franck's Sonata, composed in 1886 and dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. A true model of cyclic form, the work is distinguished by its lyricism, thematic coherence, and expressive power, emblematic of late Romanticism.
After Franck's death in 1890, an adaptation for viola was announced by the historic Parisian publisher, although no copy has been found to date. This edition therefore relies heavily on the arrangement by Jules Delsart (originally conceived for cello and piano), the only version explicitly approved by the composer. The viola, naturally placed in the middle register, gains a unique color here: halfway between the brilliance of the violin and the depth of the cello, it brings a more velvety and intimate nuance, ideal for chamber musicians seeking a different timbre.
