Summary of This Score
Starting in 1651, John Playford published a series of dances with their choreographic instructions and iconic melodies, later compiled under the name "The Dancing Master". Editions continued until 1728, blending traditional airs and new themes, carried by Baroque melodic lines that are direct, memorable, and very "singable".
This anthology offers a selection of some of the most beloved airs, specially arranged for recorder (soprano or alto) and piano (with an approach perfectly transferable to harpsichord). Included are Newcastle, I Often for my Jenny Strove, Nobody's Jigg, Drive the Cold Winter Away, Black and Gray, Old Batchelor, Lilly Burlero, St. Catherine, Argiers or The Wedding Night, Beveridge's Maggot, The Queen's Delight, and The Simeron's Dance.
The arrangements, by Nikolaus Newerkla (harpsichordist, arranger, and ensemble director), are designed to enhance playing enjoyment: clear lines for the recorder, solid harmonic accompaniment on keyboard, and an optional second recorder part to enrich the texture in duo. An excellent choice for practicing articulation, dance style, and musicality in early music, both in lessons and auditions.
