This edition highlights one of the most emblematic concertos of the 19th century, both heir to classical clarity and already oriented towards fully Romantic expression. For a long time, the history of the work was associated with Ferdinand David, dedicatee and premiere soloist, then with Joseph Joachim. However, the rediscovery of solo violin part proofs, accompanied by a letter from Mendelssohn to Hubert Léonard, reveals a new source situation and documents a musical working session in Frankfurt, February 1845.
These recovered proofs are not a mere bibliographic "detail": they show very concretely how Léonard played the concerto with the composer. They include bowings and fingerings, but also finer performance information such as position shifts, use of open strings, dynamic adjustments, and additional slurs. Altogether, this suggests a practice validated, or at least approved, by Mendelssohn, enriching reflection on the style, momentum, and cantilena characteristic of this major repertoire work.
The orchestral parts remain unchanged, while the solo part benefits from this Urtext revision.
