Summary of This Score
Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus
Missa in C minor K. 427 "Great Mass in C minor"
A major work of the sacred repertoire, the "Great Mass in C minor K. 427" impresses as much by its monumentality as by the finesse of its writing. This edition highlights the full musical richness of the mass, while taking into account its particularity: a fragmentary state which, for decades, has fueled the reflection of musicologists as well as the choices of conductors and ensembles.
Designed in cooperation with the International Mozarteum Foundation of Salzburg, this Barenreiter publication offers a text conceived to reconcile editorial rigor and efficiency in rehearsal situations. The "Kyrie" and "Gloria" sections, preserved in Mozart's own hand, are established according to high scientific standards. To allow for a more complete interpretation, editor Ulrich Leisinger carries out a meticulous completion of the first two sections of the "Credo," based on Mozartian compositional techniques and stylistic parallels drawn from other works by the composer.
The movements "Sanctus" and "Benedictus" (as well as the "Hosanna"), incomplete or known only from secondary sources, are the subject of an editorial reconstruction aiming for credible musical continuity and clear sonority. Parts without known sources are deliberately omitted in order to best respect the reality of the transmitted materials. To accompany the musical work, the edition includes a substantial foreword (German/English) and a detailed critical commentary (English), invaluable for understanding the restitution choices and preparing an informed performance.
