Summary of This Score
This critical edition of Les Indes galantes (Rameau's ballet héroïque) focuses on the instrumental movements of the work: dances, orchestral entrances, and descriptive pages that embody the richness of French baroque writing. It is based on the complete edition Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR), series IV/2 and IV/7 (edited by Sylvie Bouissou ), to provide performers with a solid and directly usable musicological foundation.
The content reflects the stage evolution of the work, whose version history is particularly eventful. At the premiere on August 23, 1735, Les Indes galantes included a prologue and three acts: Le Turc généreux, Les Incas du Pérou, and Les Fleurs. Early on, Les Fleurs sparked controversy and, as of September 11, 1735, the act was extensively revised. For the revival on March 10, 1736, Rameau and Fuzelier added a new act, Les Sauvages. Subsequently, the work was performed either in a complete form (notably in 1743, 1751, and 1761 ) or in an abridged version (prologue, Les Incas du Pérou, and Les Sauvages, between 1751 and 1773 ).
To meet the needs of today's musicians, this score brings together not only the orchestral pieces in the version considered valid by Rameau in 1736 (with the second version of Les Fleurs and Les Sauvages ), but also numbers from the first version of Les Fleurs (1735) as well as its revisions from 1743 and 1773. A valuable tool for preparing a stage production, building a tailored concert program, or deepening the style (dance rhythms, articulation, orchestral color) specific to Rameau.
