Summary of This Method
Long awaited, the method "Early Start on the Double Bass" finally adapts the spirit and effectiveness of the famous Sassmannshaus methods-already widely adopted for violin, viola, and cello-to the double bass. Originally developed by Egon Sassmannshaus for other string instruments, it is here applied to the double bass by Holger Sassmannshaus and J. Peter Close, to meet the needs of a growing number of young students.
It contains all the strengths of the Sassmannshaus tradition: an accessible introduction, clear objectives, and progression at an appropriate pace. The method incorporates songs and scales very early on, as well as playing in position, to build solid foundations in intonation, reading, and left-hand technique. The numerous duets encourage ensemble playing, improve sense of tempo, and naturally establish musician's reflexes (listening, phrasing, intonation).
Designed for beginners generally starting around age 8 (sometimes as early as 6), this method takes into account the specificities of the double bass: ergonomics, gradual approach to positions, and development of a stable tone. It is presented in three volumes, with clear linguistic organization: Volume 1 is available in separate editions (German or English), while Volumes 2 and 3 feature bilingual German/English text. Original compositions by Boguslaw Furtok enrich the repertoire, and Volume 3 includes piano accompaniments for 7 pieces, perfect for work with a teacher or accompanist.
