Summary of This Score

This volume continues the new Urtext edition of Franz Schubert's lieder, offering a set of melodies composed between autumn 1814 and spring 1815, presented in an essentially chronological order (Deutsch catalogue references). It covers a pivotal period during which Schubert increasingly focuses on the Strophenlied and draws inspiration both from the tradition of the "Berliner Liederschule" (notably Reichardt) and from major German poets: Goethe, Schiller, as well as Theodor Körner, who was very prominent during these years.

Designed for practical use, this anthology gathers lieder with piano accompaniment in a vocal-piano reduction, including several emblematic pages such as "Nachtgesang" (D 119), "Trost in Tränen" (D 120), and excerpts related to "Faust" (D 126). Two appendices usefully complete the volume: they collect alternative versions (first/second versions of certain lieder) as well as a low transposition proposed for "Am See" (D 124) to adapt the tessitura. The texts are in German and the book includes English translations (by Richard Wigmore), a valuable asset for understanding the meaning, developing diction, and refining musical intention.
