Composed at the end of September 1874, shortly after losing his hearing, "Vysehrad" opens the grand symphonic cycle "Ma vlast (My Country)" in six parts. This piece tells the eventful history of the Vysehrad fortress, a landmark of Prague, through a narrative and colorful writing style typical of the Romantic symphonic poem. For musicians, it is an essential work in the orchestral repertoire, both for its evocative power and the finesse of its orchestration details.
This new Urtext edition is based on a meticulous study of sources: the autograph and the first print of the orchestral version, as well as the autograph version and the printed edition of the transcription for piano duo. Initially published by Urbanek with "Vltava (The Moldau)" in December 1879 in a piano four-hands version, then in score and parts in February 1880 (proofs revised by the composer), "Vysehrad" here benefits from significant correction work. Hugh Macdonald rectifies numerous errors from the first edition to offer a more accurate reading of Smetana's text.
