Summary of This Book

"New Standards" brings together a wide range of jazz compositions written by women, carefully curated by Terri Lyne Carrington, founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Designed as a complementary (and often alternative) resource to the traditional standards repertoire, this collection aims to broaden the musical references used in classes, ensemble workshops, jam sessions, or professional contexts.

The book spans nearly a century of creation: it notably includes a piece by Lil Hardin Armstrong dated 1922, while also featuring titles written in 2021 by young artists from the Institute. This chronological breadth connects the history of jazz to its contemporary evolutions, juxtaposing different aesthetics, approaches to harmony, sense of groove, and ways of constructing melodies conducive to improvisation.

With 101 compositions, "New Standards" highlights a remarkable diversity of voices: from recognized figures such as Mary Lou Williams, Alice Coltrane, Geri Allen, and Maria Schneider, to current voices like Esperanza Spalding, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Dorothy Ashby, Nubya Garcia, and Nicole Mitchell, among many others. The collection also celebrates the global dimension of jazz by including composers from international scenes, such as Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana and Japanese-American pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi. A valuable tool to refresh your programs, diversify your influences, and nurture a more personal playing style.
