The story follows a jealous monarch ruling over a microsociety of four musicians. As his mistrust grows, he gradually forbids each of them from playing their instrument, until imposing total silence. This leads to a period of desolation, where both the landscape and hearts fade away, before a traveler and a fairy open a way out: teaching the king to beat the drum, to reconcile power, rhythm, and the pleasure of sound.
