Summary of This Score

Commissioned by Grégoire Girard and César Birschner, to whom it is dedicated, Un Français à Rio brings together five pieces for violin and piano, designed to be approached separately depending on the context (audition, recital, interpretative work). The set offers a journey through highly characterized moods, with particular attention to rhythmic gesture, texture transparency, and timbral interplay between the two instruments.

The first piece, "In homage to Poulenc", asserts a lively and mobile personality, driven by harmonic swayings and rhythmic impulses suggesting a genuine imaginary choreography. This energy finds a direct echo in the fourth, "In homage to Honegger", which reprises this idea of movement and pulse, like a stylistic mirror within the collection.

The second movement, "In homage to Villa-Lobos", unfolds in a writing of light touches and nuances, where the violin makes the sound space shimmer with trills that emerge and fade, while the bariolages maintain a continuous murmur. The third piece, inspired by the spirit of Milhaud, on the contrary favors playfulness, mischief, and savory friction, with encounters of "spiced" notes placed over an eighth-note ostinato, conducive to precision and ensemble listening.

Finally, "In homage to Auric" unfolds a series of variations, sometimes nervous, sometimes consoling, on a theme with the character of a lullaby. An ideal conclusion to work on phrase shaping, shared breathing, and expressivity, alternating tension and relaxation.
