Essential Information About This Method

  • Structured Progression: 4 complementary parts with increasing difficulty, ideal for the first years of practice.

  • Four-Mallet Technique: targeted exercises (basics then more advanced concepts) to build autonomy, control, and consistency.

  • Varied Repertoire: pieces of graded levels to explore multiple styles and enrich ear, phrasing, and musical personality.

  • Pedagogical Flexibility: no imposed indication of mallet grip to adapt to the choices of the student and teacher.

Summary of This Method

Designed to support the student in their beginnings with four-mallet playing, this method is aimed at the first years of learning on vibraphone or marimba. The book is organized into four parts, conceived as a progressive journey: each stage introduces new technical objectives while consolidating previous skills, in order to develop a solid and lasting practice.

Each part offers a selection of exercises, some based on fundamental concepts (setup, coordination, independence) while others engage more complex skills essential for four-mallet playing. The goal is to acquire, step by step, the necessary means to become autonomous in practice: understanding, precision, and the ability to build an effective routine.

Additionally, musical pieces apply the skills addressed. The difficulty level is graded and the diversity of the music offered allows development of the ear, technique, tone, sense of phrasing, as well as the affirmation of a musical personality. The method deliberately chooses not to impose a mallet grip: the student and teacher thus retain the freedom to opt for the most suitable approach.

The indicated fingerings are standard and designed to facilitate assimilation. The majority of pieces can be played independently on marimba or vibraphone. When certain pieces are more specific to one of the two instruments, these particularities are clearly mentioned to guide practice and optimize musical output.
