Summary of this sheet music
This collection is part of a passionate journey for ragtime, first discovered through the remarkable interpretations of Joshua Rifkin and the music of Scott Joplin, then enriched by listening to historical recordings of rags and "stride" pieces. The pianistic world of James P. Johnson, notably with emblematic titles like Mule-Walk Stomp and The Carolina Shout, opens here the door to a more percussive, freer aesthetic, where the left hand carries the pulse while the right hand makes the syncopations sing.
The inspiration continues through contact with contemporary composers and pianists: William Albright and William Bolcom, whose energy in revisited ragtime and pianistic writing foster lasting admiration, not forgetting Max Morath and his way of making tradition and modernity converse. This path, made of listening, shared scores, and encounters, naturally leads to the desire to compose in turn.
The pieces presented were written in January and February 2012 for friends from Gers, and are given in the order of their composition. Some bear the direct imprint of places: Sainte-Christie and Caillavet, two hilltop villages with views of the Pyrénées, as well as Pavie, near Auch, associated with Château Monlaur. The last two rags were composed for neighbors, adding an intimate and warm dimension to the whole. The spirit of ragtime is found here: danceable structure, offbeat accents, precise phrasing, and sense of groove, with an essential recommendation to preserve the style: prioritize rhythmic clarity and flexibility rather than speed.
