Summary of This Score

Born in Montreal in 1893, Gilles Amiot grew up in Quebec and followed a unique path, divided between music and dental medicine. A student at Université Laval de Montréal from 1911, he distinguished himself through his piano playing, improvisational skills, and performances, notably as an accompanist for silent films in a Montreal cinema. Between 1912 and 1916, he composed three piano waltzes entitled Dilettante, Mélancolie, and Gaby Walz, works imbued with the lyricism typical of their era.

The project presented in this score aims to revive these forgotten pages. Captivated by their charm and influenced by the constraints of the 2020 global pandemic, the composer of this collection chose to transform the melodic spirit of these waltzes into concert études for solo saxophone. The goal is clear: to share, a century later, these melodies in a new form, exploiting the expressive resources of the saxophone and emphasizing line, breathing, and sound projection.

This score is intended for saxophonists wishing to work on writing inspired by salon repertoire, with particular attention to cantilena, the momentum of the waltz, and musical storytelling. An ideal proposal to diversify a program, deepen solo interpretation, and explore a bridge between Canadian musical heritage and contemporary creation.
