Summary of This Method

Caribbean music is an integral part of our cultural heritage and is distinguished by a danceable character, expressive phrasing, and a pulse that naturally invites movement. This method offers a musical exploration built around these aesthetics, showing how these repertoires borrowed and adapted rhythms and harmonies from the European tradition, then transformed through contact with the indigenous peoples of the region to assert their own identity.

The flute, very present in the French Caribbean (notably the "flûte des Mornes") as well as in the Spanish Caribbean, is here brought to the forefront: throughout the volume, you encounter a wide variety of rhythmic cells and typical accents. To facilitate the assimilation of these sometimes complex rhythms, rhythmic exercises are proposed in the form of short audio patterns, directly extracted from the pieces, to immediately connect reading with listening.

The recommended approach also favors oral transmission: singing the melodies (in full or in fragments) helps better integrate the accents, refine the sense of syncopation, and stabilize rhythmic placement. The method also encourages seeking style through movement and dance, then relying on the accompaniments (including playback-only versions) to anchor oneself in the groove carried by the percussion, bass, and piano.

Finally, particular attention is paid to phrasing: staccatos, legatos, and accents are presented as essential landmarks for playing "in style." The flute 1 part and the accompaniment offer a model interpretation while leaving room for your musical personality. For pieces in 4/4, it is advised to think of the beat as a half note to gain stability and breathing within the tempo.
