Summary of This Score
This score offers a string nonet by Camille Pépin, conceived as a nocturnal journey where two sound materials confront and balance each other: a deep, long, and stretched blue, and a "white energy" made of roughness, grains, touches of light. Inspired by Fabienne Verdier's pictorial series "Énergie blanche," the piece transposes into music the idea of a luminous vitality inhabiting a vast, distant, almost motionless space.
Throughout seven movements, the writing explores the timbral richness of string instruments: unsettling glissandi in the low registers, mysterious pulsation of the double bass, undulations that rise and unfold, chaotic particles and turbulences, then moments of suspension where voices gather into a common breath. The whole alternates tension and calm, movement and stillness, until a gradual fading of glimmers, as if absorbed by the night.
Commissioned by M4H - Le Concert Idéal - Festival International de Besançon, the work was premiered on August 7, 2021 at the Festival Musique aux 4 Horizons (Ronchamp) by the ensemble Le Concert Idéal under the direction of Marianne Piketty.
