Summary of This Score

Commissioned by the Andorra Sax Fest for the 2017 competition, this work places the performer at the heart of a sound setup based on the idea of call and resonance. Everything starts from two notes forming a tritone, a true initial "signal" whose reflections the piece explores: immediate echo, simple echo, then multiple echoes that seem to answer each other, overlap, diverge, and sometimes extend the energy of the initial gesture. The writing thus engages the perception of musical space and time, playing on the clarity of attack, sound sustain, and density contrasts.

In a first part with a more melodic character, the tritone unfolds and transforms: the line is constructed from fragments that stretch, reorient, ornament themselves, while keeping this intervallic core as an anchor point. This progression invites work on breath continuity, intonation stability in tense intervals, as well as fine dynamic control to bring out the different echo layers. The listener then perceives a form of inner dialogue, as if the saxophone is responding to itself.

The last third brings a change of nature: the final burst shifts the call/echo towards a pulsation logic, transforming the material into an obsessive rhythm. The score becomes more incisive, more driving, requiring solid metric precision, controlled articulation, and focused endurance until the conclusion. Designed for alto saxophone, this piece is a relevant choice to enrich a contemporary music program, prepare a competition test, or develop in-depth work on resonance, intervallic tension, and rhythmic impact.
