Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The Unity 120 fits within Blackstar's "musician-first" approach: a combo designed to cover a wide range of real-life situations (home practice, rehearsal, concert) with immediate ease of use. Within the Unity range, it represents a particularly balanced format: powerful enough to play with a drummer, yet compact, and especially expandable thanks to the Link output that allows system extension with an active Unity cabinet.

Who This Amp Is For

The Blackstar Unity 120 targets the advanced beginner to experienced bassist seeking a versatile, reliable combo that's quick to dial in. It performs well in rehearsals, on small to medium stages, and in the studio thanks to its line output and control options. Style-wise, its three voicings and detailed EQ easily cover pop, rock, funk, blues, variety, and heavier genres (modern rock, punk, metal) once the overdrive is engaged and mids are dialed in properly.

Features and Innovations

At the heart of the Unity 120 is a simple and effective architecture: an input gain with saturation indicator to set levels without guessing, a dedicated attenuator for active instruments to preserve headroom, then a master volume to control overall output. The 3 voicings (Classic, Modern, Overdrive) provide three immediately usable starting points, complemented by a 3-band EQ and a semi-parametric mid : ideal for shifting from a vintage-style warm low-mid to a more defined attack that cuts through the mix.

To enrich your playing without adding pedals, the amp includes a built-in compressor (perfect for smoothing dynamic variations, enhancing sustain, and "gluing" the bass into the groove) plus footswitchable chorus and overdrive to change textures in real time. Finally, the connectivity meets modern needs: line/MP3 input for playing along with backing tracks, line/headphone output on XLR and 6.35mm Jack with independent volume for silent practice or connecting to a PA/interface, and Link output to connect an active Unity cabinet when more projection is needed.

Sound Character

The Unity 120 is designed to deliver a clean, firm, and clear foundation, with power reserve that keeps the attack sharp and the lows controlled even when the drummer pushes hard. The Classic voicing emphasizes natural roundness and musical mids, perfect for "old school" tones and lines that need to carry without aggression. The Modern voicing offers more definition and attack precision, ideal for slap, chords, or dense contexts (two guitars, keyboards). The Overdrive voicing adds grit and presence: an excellent tool to make the bass stand out during energetic verses, thicken choruses, or regain controlled aggression in rock.

The 12-inch Eminence Opus speaker contributes to this "punchy" character: fast response, solid lows, and usable mids, very practical for sitting well in the mix without turning up the volume. With the compressor, you can choose between a more "percussive" feel and a smoother output, while the chorus widens the soundstage for atmospheric passages, intros, or Peter Hook-style lines without complex settings.
