What Blue Cat Destructor 2 Is For

Blue Cat Destructor 2 is a distortion and amp modeling plug-in designed to shape the character of a source, musically or radically. It can be used on guitars and basses (clean, crunch, high-gain, cab simulation via IR) as well as on drums (controlled drive, crushing, parallel distortion), synths (lo-fi, aggressive, digital textures), or vocals (grain, saturation, density). Thanks to its filters, dynamic control, and visualization tools, it integrates easily into a mix for anything from simple coloration to deliberate sound design, including on buses or a full mix.

Main Features

A Versatile Distortion Engine, From Realism to Experimental

Destructor 2 covers a very wide range of nonlinearities: overdrive, hard and soft clipping, analog-like compression, tape saturation, fuzz, as well as more "modern" effects such as bit crushing, digital noise, aliasing, and filtered processing. Its perceptual modeling approach aims for a more direct feel when adjusting, with a rendering designed to "sit" in the mix faster than stacking separate modules.

Complete Processing Chain: Dynamics, Filters, Output Safety

To maintain control, the plug-in includes an input gate and compressor, pre and post filters (with more precise filtering options, including peak and comb filters depending on the modules), as well as a brickwall limiter on output to protect your monitoring during extreme settings. Together, this forms a true nonlinear "tone shaping" channel strip, ideal for working quickly and cleanly.

Adaptive Shaper and Dynamic Control

Destructor offers an adaptive shaper with exclusive shape dynamics control: the color and saturation can follow the signal dynamics for a more organic behavior. The Drive Dynamics parameter adjusts the drive's influence on the waveshaper curve, and a perceived loudness control helps maintain a consistent level when pushing the drive (useful for objectively comparing settings).

Tone Maps: Quickly Explore, Combine, and Create Sounds

With tone maps, you can navigate a 2D space to explore preset variations and create new characters by morphing, without necessarily changing every parameter. This is a very efficient tool to find the "right" distortion on a track or to generate sound design ideas in seconds.

Built-in IRs: Load and Transform Your Impulse Responses

To complement the simulation (cabinet, coloration, ambiance), Destructor 2 can load and transform impulse responses. This allows you to combine your distortion with a speaker cabinet response or a creative IR, integrating it more naturally into a mix, especially on guitar/bass or electronic textures.

Side Chain and Visualization: Precision and Creativity

The plug-in can be driven by an internal or external side chain to trigger or modulate distortion rhythmically and expressively. On the control side, it offers a real-time spectrum analyzer, display of the distortion curve with signal histograms, and the ability to import reference curves measured with Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst Multi for more precise tone matching.

Custom Interface and "EZ" Mode

Destructor 2 emphasizes user experience: you can customize the appearance module by module with a huge choice of styles, or opt for an "EZ" pedal/rack type mode with a few key parameters. Version 2.02 further improves ergonomics with HD 3D graphics, a Rack Designer, random GUI component selection options, and display optimizations (notably for Retina and HiDPI scaling).
