What Blue Cat Protector Is For
Blue Cat Protector is a stereo brickwall limiter plug-in designed to secure your levels and stabilize dynamics, especially on the master bus of a DAW. Its main role is simple and essential: to prevent any digital clipping at the output while allowing you to increase the overall level and perceived loudness in a controlled manner. It is aimed at both home studio producers and engineers who want a quick-to-set "safety net" without sacrificing transparency.
Beyond protection, Protector also becomes a sound design tool: placed on a track (drums, bass, synths, vocals), it can generate punch, pumping, controlled clipping, or aggressive limiting for more modern effects. The result depends on your dynamic response setting: you move from subtle control to a more colored character, ideal for denser textures and increased presence in the mix.
Main Features
0 dB Limiting and Waveshaping: Safety and Character
Blue Cat Protector combines a 0 dB brickwall peak limiter with a waveshaper to strictly manage peaks while offering a broader sonic palette than a simple "clinical" limiter. The dynamic response is continuously adjustable, allowing you to tailor the processing behavior to your context: light mastering, bus control, or intentionally aggressive limiting to achieve more attack and density.
Optional Lookahead and Latency Management
The optional lookahead anticipates transients for cleaner limiting, reducing artifacts on fast attacks (kick, snare, percussion). Outside this mode, the plug-in is designed to operate with an immediate feel, maintaining zero latency, which is practical during production and sessions where responsiveness is important.
Controlled Stereo: Stereo Link and DC Filter
The stereo link control helps maintain a coherent stereo image during gain reduction: useful on a master, but also on subgroups (drum bus, instruments). A DC filter is also available to remove any DC offset, preventing unnecessary headroom consumption and improving processing stability.
Premium Monitoring: Peak/RMS, Loudness Boost, and Histogram
Protector emphasizes visual feedback for fast and accurate work. Its large zoomable Peak and RMS meters, along with the gain reduction meter, make the impact of limiting immediately readable. The fully configurable dynamic histogram provides a more "statistical" view of behavior, and real-time loudness boost monitoring lets you verify what you actually gain in perceived level, without relying solely on your ears at constant volume.
Side Chain and Modulation via MIDI CC Output
Blue Cat Protector offers an original approach to side chaining through a MIDI CC output. Beyond the classic use (triggering a dynamic action from a source), this method opens the door to modulating parameters of other plug-ins in real time: you can control a filter, reverb, delay, or any automatable parameter to create very musical pumping and movement effects synchronized with the signal's energy.
Blue Cat Workflow: Automation, Presets, and Adaptable Interface
Like other Blue Cat plug-ins, Protector integrates easily into a modern workflow: full automation, MIDI Learn, preset management, state copy/paste between instances, Undo/Redo, and smooth bypass to enable or disable processing without clicks. The interface is zoomable and customizable (transparency), which helps both on a laptop and on a 4K screen.

Questions frequently asked
Is Blue Cat Audio Protector compatible with my DAW on Mac or Windows?
VST-2, VST-3, AU, and AAX formats are supported on Mac, while Windows supports VST-2, VST-3, and AAX.
Can the limiter prevent peaks from exceeding 0 dB?
The brickwall limiter sets an output protection fixed at 0 dB. An optional lookahead anticipates fast transients to more cleanly reduce peaks.
Is there latency during mixing?
Latency is zero when lookahead is not enabled. Enabling this feature adds latency to anticipate attacks, especially on kick, snare, or percussion. This operation allows choosing between immediate responsiveness and more anticipated limiting.
Can this limiter be used to create pumping or distortion?
The dynamic response is continuously adjustable, from transparent limiting to distortion via the waveshaper. A MIDI CC output can also modulate parameters of other plug-ins based on the processed signal.
What meters are available to monitor gain reduction?
Large Peak and RMS meters, a gain reduction meter, and a configurable dynamics histogram allow monitoring of the processing. The loudness boost is displayed in real time.
