Summary of This Book

Designed for drummers and percussionists who want to expand their rhythmic vocabulary, this book offers an in-depth introduction to the major languages of Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian drumming, while also opening up the world of New Orleans. The goal is clear: to help you enrich your "palette" of grooves, coordinations, and embellishments by understanding the origins of the styles and how to make them sound credible.

Each style section is based on a solid pedagogical progression: a presentation of the context, information on derivatives and influences, as well as historical references to place the rhythms within their culture. You will also find a biography of the faculty member who teaches the style, providing a concrete and "hands-on" angle to the learning process. The musical examples are notated to work precisely on figures, orchestrations (snare drum, bass drum, toms, cymbals), and articulation.

To move from paper to real playing, the pack includes 2 CDs as well as online audio. You can first listen to the examples performed by the Drummers Collective instructors, then practice with performance tracks and play-along tracks : ideal for developing consistency, timing, dynamics, and endurance, while working on musicality. This is a particularly relevant resource for developing musicians who want to gain style, listening skills, and authenticity, whether in lessons, rehearsals, or independently.
