Summary of This Method

Written by Mr. Gresham, trumpet professor at Northern Kentucky University for over three decades before his retirement in 2009, this method offers a series of studies designed from plainsongs taken from the Liber Usualis. The central idea is to use these modal melodies, naturally vocal and free from heavy harmonic weight, as a privileged support to train the ear, refine intonation, and establish a stable instrumental line.

The richness of these studies lies in their ability to work on essential fundamentals for the trumpeter without falling into mechanical exercise. The melodic contours, inspired by Gregorian chant, encourage a more "sung" approach to the instrument: breath management over time, timbre consistency, register homogeneity, and pursuit of a refined legato. This modal framework also highlights the precision of transitions, the quality of connected attacks, and mastery of resonance.

Each study has its own character, offering the student a comprehensive field for progress while renewing musical interest. By working on them rigorously (tempo, phrasing, dynamics, intonation), the student improves technique and develops true musicality, supported by a modal flavor rarely found in traditional trumpet study collections.
