A fuzz inspired by a cult outsider: the spirit of the Jordan Boss Tone

The Knight School Fuzz adopts the philosophy of a fuzz circuit as original as it is underrated: the Jordan Boss Tone. Back in the day, this type of effect was plugged directly into the guitar, long before the era of modern pedalboards, which made its integration less straightforward than many classics. While many historic fuzzes were (at least partially) copied, the Boss Tone stood out with a more singular approach, crafted by an electronics company with an atypical profile.

Despite its original format being not very "pedalboard-friendly," this grain can be heard on recordings that have become references, with artists like ZZ Top, The Black Keys, Spirit, and New Riders of the Purple Sage. This version modernizes the formula with adjusted values, different transistors, and especially a Bias capable of "melting" the sound into knotty textures when pushed to the max.

Who is the Knight School Fuzz for, and in which styles does it make a difference?

This kit is aimed at guitarists who want to get hands-on with electronics without embarking on an intimidating project: the assembly is designed to be accessible while delivering a pedal with real character at the end. Musically, the Knight School Fuzz covers a wide spectrum: blues-rock and classic rock for thickness and attack, garage and stoner for roughness, as well as indie and more experimental music when exploring the Bias settings.

In the studio, it serves both to thicken a take and to create a texture that "speaks" in the mix. Live, its appeal is to offer an expressive fuzz that can remain musical or deliberately unstable for standout passages. And since it was designed to be placed almost anywhere in the chain, it integrates easily into a modern setup.

Settings and behavior: two controls, many nuances

Bias acts like an internal voltage lever: lowering it shifts the pedal from a more "normal" fuzz to a thinner, softer output with textures many associate with video game aesthetics. Pushed very far, it adds a velvety crackle and can evoke slight sensations of lower octave. This setting rewards playing dynamics: attack, palm-mutes, and right-hand nuances become the core of the sound.

Gain is wired in a particular way: it behaves like a separation between the guitar and the rest of the circuit, and its action can resemble a guitar volume knob. Leaving it at maximum allows you to control much of the saturation level directly from your instrument's controls, making the pedal very lively and easy to "clean up" with the volume knob.

Note: with Bias at maximum when powering on, the pedal may oscillate and generate drone/synth-like textures until it stabilizes (by adjusting Gain). This instability is part of the concept: a playground for the curious, to be tamed according to your context.

The sound

The Knight School Fuzz delivers a dense and organic fuzz when kept on stable settings, with a clear attack and a grain that retains definition. It can also transform into a texture machine: low Bias for more "weakened" and edgy saturations, high Bias for crackles, granular velvet, and borderline behaviors flirting with glitch and drone. The result is very responsive to playing and pickups: single coils for bite and clarity, humbuckers for wall of sound and natural compression.
