A 70's reinterpretation of an essential classic

The SideArm Overdrive is rooted in the idea of the famous "green" overdrive that appeared in the late 70s: that tight grain, the mid hump that helps the guitar cut through the mix, and the sensation of natural sustain without falling into massive distortion. Catalinbread does not aim for an identical copy: the brand captures the spirit of the reference circuit and evolves it to offer more control, especially over the mids and the overall frequency response.

In this version, the "hump frequency" is placed at 1 kHz, which opens up the upper mids more and brings a more immediate presence. Meanwhile, the Mids control remains centered at 720 Hz, the iconic zone that defines the "green" character: you can thus keep the traditional creamy side... or refine and modernize it.

For which guitarists and styles?

The Catalinbread SideArm targets guitarists who want an expressive overdrive pedal, simple to dial in, but capable of adapting to different amps and guitars. It suits both intermediate players and seasoned musicians looking for a reliable foundation for their pedalboard.

In blues, rock, pop, funk, and alternative rock, it excels at thickening a clean tone, adding punch to an amp's crunch, or pushing an already saturated channel for solos. In studio contexts, it is useful for placing the guitar correctly in the mix thanks to its precise midrange work. Live, its ability to enhance attack and clarity helps maintain audibility without necessarily increasing overall volume.

Controls, settings, and philosophy of the SideArm

The SideArm goes straight to the point with four potentiometers, each designed to be truly usable across its entire range. The Drive control sets the amount of gain, with a range claimed to be wider than a classic "green" overdrive: you can stay in a slight clean boost or go for a more aggressive drive for riffs and sustained leads.

The Mids control engages a midrange control centered around 720 Hz : turning it up boosts this band for a more "forward" guitar; turning it down scoops the same area to open up the sound and avoid a too nasal effect. The Tone control acts as a Tilt EQ centered at 1 kHz : below this point, you thicken the tone (more bass, less treble); above it, you gain brightness and articulation. Finally, Volume manages the output level to balance the unit or drive the amp input.

For pedalboard integration, the pedal offers true bypass and operates in mono (one input, one output). The power supply accepts a range of 9 to 18V DC (center negative), convenient if you want to optimize dynamic headroom depending on your power setup and amp.

The sound

The SideArm delivers a 70's style overdrive, focused on a very musical mid presence, ideal for lead parts and rhythms that need to remain clear. Moving the hump to 1 kHz adds a more immediate bite in the upper mids while retaining the "green" DNA thanks to the Mids control centered at 720 Hz.

Playing it reveals a dynamic and responsive feel: the pedal respects attack nuances, cleans up well when rolling back the guitar volume (depending on pickups and amp), and allows precise sculpting of the zone that makes the difference in a mix. It can serve as a main drive base or as a "second stage" to push another overdrive, a preamp, or an already crunchy channel without collapsing or becoming muddy.
