Summary of This Score

Pierre Vachon (born in Avignon in 1738) was a brilliant violinist, heard on the major stages of Paris, London, and Berlin, before being appointed Konzertmeister of the Royal Orchestra of Berlin in 1786. A particularly inspired composer in instrumental music, he notably left about thirty string quartets of very fine craftsmanship, which rank among the French successes of the late 18th century.

Parisian publishers used the expression "quatuor concertant" to designate works where the four instruments are treated with genuine concern for balance. This is precisely the spirit of these 6 quartets: far from a simple melody with accompaniment, each part finds its place, takes the floor, responds, and drives the musical discourse forward. The result is refined chamber music, built on clear writing, elegant imitations, and a beautiful contrapuntal density, ideal for developing listening skills, ensemble coordination, and unified articulation.

Collected in opus XI, these 6 quartets each distinguish themselves while sharing a coherent structure: each is in 3 movements, opens with a Moderato, and alternates modes and tempi to create contrast and depth. Their duration, ranging from 10 to 20 minutes, makes them easily programmable in concert, while remaining very satisfying for study in rehearsal.

Unlike other publications of the time, these quartets contain no figured bass, which naturally guides interpretation toward a performance without continuo. In the repertoire, they can be compared to the already published quartets of Gossec: a style both elegant, expressive, and demanding, which values ensemble cohesion and the personality of each instrumentalist.
