Summary of This Method
Developed with the help of instrument teachers, this method offers an approach to musical training through the orchestra, designed to make solfège concepts more immediate and less abstract. The student learns in constant connection with their instrument: reading, rhythm, ear training, and musical understanding are built from real playing situations, which facilitates assimilation and encourages regular practice.
The progression emphasizes oral skills before written ones: listening, imitation, singing, and perception of pitch and rhythms precede notation on the staff. This approach promotes more developed aural training, notably through the interpretation of scores by different instrumentalists, and helps the student better understand and analyze the pieces presented since they first experience them through instrumental playing.
The collective dimension holds a central place: working in a group develops autonomy (holding one's part, navigating a score, anticipating), attention to others, and overall musical awareness. In practice, this collective instrumental class can also become a motivating springboard: as soon as the level allows, the student will naturally want to join an ensemble at the conservatory or music school.
Each volume of Symphonic FM is organized into two materials: a student book (chosen according to the instrument played) and a teacher's book. From volume 5 onward, the presentation of the student books evolves for practical reasons related to the density of the work: a main workbook gathers the content common to all instruments, complemented by a separate part specific to each instrument, including instrumental duets, instrumental versions of songs, and instrumental practices. Thus, the student directly selects the workbook corresponding to their instrument.
