A Cort x Rob Elrick collaboration focused on playability
Developed with the expertise of luthier Rob Elrick (Elrick Bass Guitars), the NJS series continues a collaboration already recognized by bassists. Relaunched on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Elrick Bass Guitars, the Cort Elrick NJS 5 embraces this "accessible high-end" philosophy: modern design, refined ergonomics, and fast feel, with an elegant gloss black finish.
For which bassists and styles?
The Cort Elrick NJS 5 is aimed at intermediate to advanced bassists seeking a reliable, expressive, and comfortable 5-string bass, equally suited for live performance and recording. Its long scale and active electronics make it particularly comfortable for funk, jazz, gospel, pop, rock, and modern music where impeccable definition is expected, especially on the low string.
The sound
The alder body delivers a balanced response, with present mids and firm lows, ideal for clarity in a mix. The Canadian hard maple neck and fingerboard enhance attack and precision, with a natural snap that highlights both fingerstyle and pick playing. The two Jazz-style VTB-ST pickups allow blending between warmth (neck pickup) and articulation (bridge pickup), while the Bartolini 3-band preamp offers effective EQ shaping: solid lows, mids that sit well in the mix, and highs for brightness and slap. The 35" / 889 mm scale length also contributes to better string tension, with a tighter and more defined low B string.
Recommended compatible accessories
To maintain the original feel, you can opt for an identical replacement set: D'Addario XL 170-5SL (factory-installed reference on this model).

Is the low B string well defined on this 5-string bass?

What is the neck width of the NJS 5?
The nut width is 48 mm, with a 18 mm string spacing at the MetalCraft M bridge. The neck is made of Canadian hard maple with a maple fingerboard and 24 frets.
What electronic adjustments does this Cort bass offer?
The active electronics combine two Jazz-style VTB-ST pickups with a Bartolini US custom 3-band preamp. The neck and bridge pickups allow balancing roundness and articulation.
