A High-End Collaboration: Elrick DNA at Cort
The NJS 5 continues the collaboration between Cort and luthier Rob Elrick (Elrick Bass Guitars). Having previously teamed up years ago on a model inspired by the "e-volution Bass," the two brands renew the spirit of this approach: a bass designed for playability, precision, and the demands of bassists seeking a true "boutique" feel within a controlled production.
For Whom and Which Styles?
The Cort Elrick NJS 5 targets intermediate to advanced bassists who want a versatile 5-string capable of covering wide ranges without sacrificing comfort. Its balance between definition and warmth makes it very comfortable in funk, jazz, fusion, gospel, pop, rock, and contemporary music, especially when the 5th string becomes central (modern grooves, low-register lines, dense arrangements).
The Sound
The alder body provides warm low-mids and a consistent response, perfect for a versatile bass. The maple neck and fingerboard add clarity and attack, helping notes remain clear even with dynamic playing. The two Jazz-type pickups allow switching from a tight, snappy sound (bridge pickup) to a rounder, fuller tone (neck pickup), with excellent balance in the blended position. The Bartolini 3-band preamp offers precise tonal adjustments to instantly tailor the tone: more body, more brightness, or emphasized mids to cut through the mix. Finally, the 35" / 889 mm scale length enhances low-end definition and sustain, while the zero fret contributes to a consistent feel between open and fretted strings.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
To maintain the original feel, use a D'Addario XL 170-5SL string set identical to the factory setup. A clip-on tuner is perfect for quick tuning adjustments, and a good quality 6.35 mm jack cable is recommended to fully exploit the preamp's dynamics both in rehearsal and on stage.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Cort Elrick NJS 5 suitable for funk and gospel styles?
The two Jazz-style VTB-ST pickups and the Bartolini US Custom 3-band preamp allow adjustment of bass, midrange, and treble for funk grooves, gospel, jazz, or fusion. The alder body provides low-midrange, while the maple fingerboard enhances attack.
What is the benefit of the 35-inch scale length on this 5-string bass?
With a 35" (889 mm) scale length, this bass favors note clarity in the low register and sustain. This length especially helps maintain a defined response on the 5th string.
What is the neck width at the nut?
The bone nut measures 48 mm wide, with a zero fret for a consistent feel between open and fretted notes.
What electronic controls does the NJS 5 offer?
The Bartolini US Custom preamp features active 3-band EQ. The two Jazz-style pickups allow for a tighter sound at the bridge, a rounder tone at the neck, or a balanced mix in the middle position. A 6.35 mm jack cable is required to connect the bass to an amplifier.
Which replacement strings should be used on this bass?
A set of D'Addario XL 170-5SL is recommended to maintain the original setup. The string spacing at the MetalCraft M bridge is 18 mm.
