Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range

CVL develops and manufactures shells in Italy for assemblers, luthiers, and drummers who want to customize their instrument down to the smallest details. This birch shell fits within a "workshop" logic: a healthy, consistent, and controlled base designed to accommodate the hardware of your choice. Its exclusive manufacturing process, which uses less glue than traditional methods, aims to preserve the acoustic character of the wood and offer a more organic response, while maintaining industrial consistency thanks to ISO 9001 certification.

Who This Drum/Shell Is For

This shell is primarily intended for drum builders, technicians, craftsmen, and intermediate to expert drummers who want to create a snare drum or tom shell "à la carte" (according to the chosen depth and hardware). Birch, known for its control and clear articulation, is particularly suited to contexts where precision is key: studio, pop, modern rock, funk, gospel, contemporary music, as well as live setups requiring a well-defined sound that is easy to mic.

Features and Innovations

The main feature of this model is that it is delivered unpierced: the holes for lugs, trigger, butt plate, and vent must be made by you. This allows you to optimize ergonomics (trigger position, lug orientation, hoop choice, type of snare wires) and tailor the shell to a precise specification. For reliable drilling, it is recommended to use a Sparedrum LO16 or LO26 template to correctly position the future holes, then measure and verify the required diameters based on the selected hardware. Using drill bits suitable for hard woods helps achieve a clean cut and limits veneer splintering.

Sound Characteristics

Birch is a medium-density wood often chosen for its ability to produce a structured and controlled sound. It emphasizes present highs with slightly recessed mids, which improves attack clarity and note separation in dense mixes. In the low end, it delivers a solid attack and a punchy feel, especially appreciated when seeking a fast and precise response.

With a 6-ply construction and a thickness of 5.4 mm, this shell tends to offer a balance between resonance and sustain: lively enough to breathe, yet easy to control with a microphone. The 45-degree interior bearing edges generally promote a clear skin vibration, a sharp attack, and better definition, perfectly matching the "studio" DNA of birch. Finally, the CVL process using less glue helps preserve a more natural feel in the response, with projection that remains clean and usable across many styles.
