Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range

CVL designs and manufactures shells in Italy intended for drum making and customization. This fir shell fits within a "workshop" approach: providing a ready-to-assemble shell with consistent manufacturing quality and process control (ISO 9001 certification), while leaving drummers or builders the choice of hardware, placement, and sonic orientation. The exclusive process developed by CVL aims to use less glue than traditional methods to preserve a more natural vibrational behavior of the wood.

Who This Drum/Shell Is For

This 14-inch shell is primarily aimed at drummers looking to move into "custom" territory: personalized snare drum projects, set modifications, restoration, or creating an instrument with character. It is also well suited for technicians, craftsmen, demanding DIYers, and schools/workshops assembling educational instruments. Style-wise, it is versatile: rock, pop, funk, soul, modern jazz, alternative music... the final sound will largely depend on the choice of heads, hoop type, trigger, and tuning.

Features and New Developments

The shell is delivered unpierced: holes for lugs, trigger, butt plate, and vent must be drilled. This approach ensures maximum compatibility with your hardware (lug spacing, screw diameter, trigger position) and facilitates both vintage-style projects and modern setups. To assist with placement, you can use a Sparedrum LO16 or LO26 template to correctly position future drillings. For a clean job, it is recommended to use "hardwood" drill bits and to measure and verify the required diameters according to your hardware before drilling.

Chamfers are standard with a 45-degree internal profile, a common choice for good head seating and precise response. There is also an option to request unchamfered shells, which will interest very specific projects (custom chamfer profile, more artisanal approach, or reproducing particular specifications).

The Sound

Fir is a wood that generally provides an "easy" playing feel: the shell responds quickly, with broad vibration and natural musicality. On a 5.4 mm shell, this relatively lightweight nature favors open resonance, some softness in attack, and nuanced dynamics, which can be highly appreciated for medium to low tunings or sensitive settings oriented towards ghost notes and articulation.

The 6-ply construction seeks balance: enough structure to remain stable and homogeneous while retaining breathability. The CVL process using less glue contributes to freer shell vibration, with a more pronounced "wood" feel and sustain that expresses itself depending on your assembly choices (hoops, tension rods, heads, vent, damping). The standard 45-degree internal chamfer tends to provide definition, better attack precision, and consistent response around the entire hoop, especially useful if you aim for a versatile and easy-to-tune instrument.
