Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

With this series, CVL clearly aims to return to the fundamentals of "old school" shells found on many snares and toms from the 60s and 70s: mahogany plies combined with a poplar ply, for a round, singing, and very musical sonic signature. This shell fits within a "modern vintage" logic: the aesthetics and wood formula recall the golden decades of acoustic drums, while the manufacturing consistency and quality control meet current standards. The result is a high-quality base to build an instrument with a marked character without sacrificing assembly precision.

Who This Drum/Shell Is For

This CVL 14 shell is aimed at drummers and instrument builders who want to shape their sound and hardware configuration rather than buying a pre-drilled instrument. It is particularly suited for intermediate to expert profiles, backline technicians, and custom enthusiasts who wish to choose every component (lugs, trigger, hoops, vent). Style-wise, the mahogany and poplar combination is an excellent playground for vintage rock, blues, soul, funk, and studio settings, wherever one seeks body, substance, and a less aggressive attack than very dense shells.

Features and Innovations

The uniqueness of this model lies primarily in its optimized 5-ply construction and an exclusive manufacturing process developed by CVL, designed to use less glue than so-called "traditional" methods. Less glue potentially means less parasitic rigidity between plies and thus a more organic feel: the shell reacts easily, with freer vibration and dynamics that develop quickly, even at low volume. The choice of an unpierced shell is also a full-fledged "feature": it allows adapting the spacing and positioning of elements to your hardware, playing preferences, or faithful reproduction of a vintage setup.

For clean drilling, it is recommended to carefully prepare the layout plan (lugs, trigger, counterpart, and vent), to measure and verify the required diameters according to the chosen hardware, and to use drill bits suited for hardwood. To help correctly position future holes, you can rely on a Sparedrum LO16 or Sparedrum LO26 template.

Sound

The "African mahogany plus poplar" recipe is renowned for its very musical balance. The mahogany provides a sensation of warmth, present low-mids, and a slightly "velvety" character that helps the sound stay full even when tuned down. The poplar, placed at the core of the structure, often contributes to a supple response and even diffusion, with a "round" and easy-to-control aspect. This combination favors a less sharp attack than a very hard shell while retaining enough definition to stand out in a mix.

The 5.4 mm thickness supports a shell that breathes: it generally offers good sensitivity, musical sustain, and natural projection, particularly pleasant for medium and medium-low tunings. The 45-degree interior bearing edges contribute to efficient head vibration and a clear response: you maintain stick precision while preserving the typical "softness" of vintage shells. Depending on the choice of heads and hoops, you can achieve anything from a very open and singing sound to a shorter, "fat" studio-style tone.
