Rico Royal: a reed designed for consistency and versatility

The Rico Royal series follows the line of Rico reeds, known for their accessibility and efficiency, while offering a more "structured" approach to control. The idea is simple: maintain the direct and responsive nature of a traditional cut, while adding features inspired by the French cut to achieve greater clarity, stability, and timbre definition. The result: a reed aimed at consistency and reliability, especially sought after when moving between rehearsals, concerts, and recording sessions.

For which musician and in which styles?

With a strength of 4.0, this model is primarily intended for advanced musicians (and many professionals) who already have good breath support and a stable embouchure. This strength supports projection and sound control, while promoting solid intonation when paired with a suitable mouthpiece.

The character of the Rico Royal is particularly suited to jazz and classical contexts: clean attack, clearer sound, and balanced response to switch from articulated playing to more legato phrases. Depending on your equipment (mouthpiece, tip opening, facing) and your approach, they can also work very well in wind orchestras, brass bands, or chamber music.

Sound and design

The Rico Royal reeds are designed to offer a clear timbre with controlled response across the entire range. The more robust vamp (the thinnest vibrating part) promotes a feeling of stability : the sound "holds" better, with a more predictable attack and smoother continuity between low, middle, and high registers. This approach helps maintain clear projection without making the response unstable, which is valuable for dynamic passages, piano nuances, or fast articulations.

Mini glossary : Strength refers to the reed's resistance (the higher the number, the stiffer the reed). The cut describes the geometry (thickness and profile) influencing attack, flexibility, and tone color. The vamp is the main vibrating area, crucial for response and sound stability.

Recommended compatible accessories

Each instrument and mouthpiece has specific dimensions, and this model exists in different versions, so it is best to choose your accessories (ligature, mouthpiece cap, reed case) according to your exact mouthpiece. If you provide me with your instrument (clarinet or saxophone, model) and your mouthpiece, I can guide you towards perfectly compatible accessories.
