Summary of This Score
This second volume gathers Franz Liszt's piano transcriptions of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphonies No. 6 through No. 9, offering a complete immersion into Beethoven's orchestral world... but under ten fingers. Included are Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, "Pastoral," with its evocative scenes and descriptive writing; Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, famous for its rhythmic drive; Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93, more concise and full of wit; and finally Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, "Choral," a monumental work that Liszt manages to condense into a remarkably dense piano score.
Beyond the repertoire, this edition highlights Liszt's artistic approach: his desire to circulate the symphonic work at a time when recordings did not yet exist, and to offer pianists a true "orchestral" experience at the keyboard. The score also includes Liszt's handwritten preface in French dedicated to his transcriptions, accompanied by an English translation, as well as an introduction by Dr. Alan Walker, useful for placing these pages within the history of Romantic virtuosity.
Reprint of Volume 2 of Beethoven Symphonies/Piano Score/dedicated to Baron H. de Bülow/by F. Liszt, originally published by Breitkopf and Härtel (Leipzig, 1865). A must-have for pianists attracted to great transcriptions, analysis, and classical repertoire revisited by an exceptional composer-pianist.
