Summary of This Score

This critical edition of Claude Debussy's Trio comes from the Complete Works of Claude Debussy, Series III, volume 1. Composed at the end of summer 1880, when Debussy was not yet eighteen, this Trio is the composer's second preserved instrumental work and already stands out as an ambitious page of chamber music. For a long time, the transmission of the work seemed fragmentary: only the autograph score of the opening movement was known, supplemented by a cello part containing the other three movements. The situation changed in the early 1980s, when musicologist Ellwood Derr identified, at the University of Michigan Library (Ann Arbor), the score of the three missing movements within a bequest linked to the French pianist Maurice Dumesnil. The latter reportedly acquired the manuscript in 1932 from Emma Debussy, the composer's widow. Beyond the historical interest, this score reveals a young Debussy already confident in his writing, with remarkable ease at the piano and a sense of instrumental dialogue that makes it an excellent study piece for ensembles wishing to deepen their understanding of style, articulation, balance, and phrasing in the classical repertoire.
