Summary of This Score

Maurice Ravel often showed a fascination for the musical atmosphere of Vienna and the spirit of the waltz, a fascination that spans several stages of his creative work. Between the sketch, as early as 1906, of a work envisioned under the title Wien and the completion, in 1920, of La Valse, he composed in 1911 the Valses nobles et sentimentales for piano. This score presents itself as an immersion into a dance language that is both stylized and modern, where the pulse, accents, and harmonies create shifting moods, sometimes bright, sometimes more troubled.

In 1912, Ravel orchestrated these waltzes: the pianistic writing then transforms into a shimmering orchestral texture, revealing all the finesse of his art of color, balance, and texture. This orchestrated version also gave rise to a ballet project entitled Adélaïde ou le langage des fleurs, highlighting the narrative and theatrical potential of the music. Whether one is interested in the waltz as a form, Ravel's orchestral style, or the bridge between concert music and dance, this score represents a major reference in the classical repertoire.
