Summary of This Score

La Belle Excentrique is a suite of three dances (Marche franco-lunaire, Valse du mystérieux baiser dans l'oeil, Cancan grand-mondain) and an interlude (Grande Ritournelle), composed by Satie in 1920 following a commission from the French avant-garde dancer and choreographer Caryathis for her first major post-war recital. Jean Cocteau contributed to the work as costume designer and author (he also invented the title La Belle Excentrique). Originally composed for piano four hands (summer 1920), then for small orchestra (1921), the three dances premiered in June 1921 at the Théâtre du Colisée under the unifying title La Belle Excentrique - Fantaisie sérieuse.
