Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range
The DW Design Series was designed to offer the aesthetics and spirit of DW in a more accessible range, while retaining elements directly inspired by the brand's standards. Within this series, there are five configurations (Mini Pro, Frequent Flyer, club kit with 20" bass drum, Standard, and an Acrylic set), positioning this Concert Tom Set as a natural extension to customize a Design kit and add tonal colors without changing the drum set.
Who This Drum/Concert Tom Set Is For
This concert tom set is aimed at beginner to intermediate drummers seeking serious craftsmanship, as well as experienced musicians looking for a compact module for concerts, rehearsals, and tight setups. The 6 and 8 inch sizes are ideal for styles requiring precision and articulation: pop, funk, fusion, contemporary music, worship, and even electronic music played on acoustic drums.
Features and Innovations
The wooden shells in the series use HVLT technology, designed to optimize manufacturing consistency and shell response. On the hardware side, professional-grade features include STM (Silent Block) tom suspension to allow freer shell vibration, True Pitch tension rods for finer and more stable tuning, and the DW MAG snare trigger present in the Design ecosystem. With the included DWSM992, setup is quick and reliable, maintaining a clean configuration designed for live performance.
Sound
In concert tom configuration (without resonant heads), these toms deliver a sharp attack, a more direct sound, and a shorter decay than a traditional tom. The result: clear notes that easily cut through a mix, particularly effective for fast fills and accents.
North American maple (used on the wooden kits of the series, excluding the Acrylic set) is valued for its balance: rich mids, natural warmth, and versatile projection. Combined with HVLT design and STM suspension, it offers a responsive feel, controlled sustain, and excellent clarity even at low volumes.
