A classic vibe, modernized EarthQuaker Devices style

The Depths captures the spirit of the famous optical vibe effects: this modulation with an organic, almost "rotary" movement, capable of thickening a clean tone or adding dimension to distortion. Whereas some vintage vibes could be temperamental depending on guitars and output levels, EarthQuaker Devices designed The Depths as a more universal pedal, comfortable with different instruments, pickups, and especially very versatile placed before or after your drive pedals.

Who it's for and what for: from vintage groove to modern soundscapes

The Depths is aimed equally at guitarists seeking a "sixties" vibe for blues and rock, as well as musicians oriented towards indie, psychedelic, ambient, or post-rock looking for movement and depth. In the studio, it adds immediate dimension to arpeggios, sustained chords, and melodic lines. Live, its level control helps it cut through the mix, and the momentary mode via Flexi-Switch is perfect for accentuating a chorus, transition, or break without tap dancing.

It works very well on a classic pedalboard (before the amp or in an effects chain), but also with higher-level instruments: bass, keyboards, or any source with a 6.35mm Jack output. The sound changes significantly depending on your attack and placement in the chain, making it an expressive and very "alive" pedal under your fingers.

Controls and features: a sculptable modulation, from simple to addictive

The Depths offers a straightforward yet very complete interface. Rate controls the speed (from slow and hypnotic to fast and nervous). Intensity sets the overall depth: below noon, the sensation stays more classic and subtle; beyond that, the effect becomes more dramatic. Voice acts as a spectral shaping control: turning it up adds fullness with more bass, turning it down yields a tighter texture focused on mids. Throb controls the pulse in the low end, particularly impressive with a neck pickup, rounder tones, or when adding overdrive, distortion, or fuzz. Finally, Level adjusts the output volume: the knob is around 1 o'clock by default, and beyond that, you have a handy boost to maintain presence when the modulation becomes very deep.

Regarding switching, the Flexi-Switch technology (relay true bypass) allows two modes: either classic on/off activation or a long press for momentary triggering, then immediate return to bypass upon release. Note: since switching relies on a relay, power is required for the signal to pass through.

Sound

The Depths stands out with a rich and organic movement, featuring the typical depth sensation of an optical vibe: a three-dimensional "swirl" that remains musical even when pushed hard. At 9V, the tone is generally warmer and softer, perfect for vintage textures and groovy rhythms. Increasing the voltage provides more dynamic headroom and clarity, which can help maintain definition on modern sounds, cascading delays, or denser drives.

The pedal responds very well to playing dynamics: attack, pickup choice, and note articulation directly influence the sense of movement. It's the kind of effect that can stay subtle to "widen" a clean tone or become a signature sound for spacey intros and psychedelic leads. It is notably found on pedalboards of artists like Albert Hammond Jr, Ben Howard, and Adrian Belew, proving its versatility from alternative rock to more textured sound worlds.
