A Modern Modulation Rooted in Classic BOSS Sounds
With the MD-200 Modulation, BOSS condenses the spirit of its legendary modulations into the 200 series: pedals designed to offer versatility, presets, and live control without sacrificing space on the pedalboard. It features iconic tones like the CE-1 Chorus (chorus and vibrato) or a Uni-Vibe style vibe, as well as more modern and creative textures. The result is a "Swiss Army knife" modulation pedal that covers both vintage sounds and contemporary effects, with ergonomics designed for playing, not tinkering.
Who Is the MD-200 For, and Which Styles Does It Excel In?
The BOSS MD-200 is aimed at guitarists (and bassists) who want a wide spectrum of modulations without multiplying pedals: chorus to widen a clean tone, phaser/flanger for rock riffs, tremolo for surf and indie, rotary for organ-inspired pads, or slicer for very modern rhythmic patterns. Thanks to presets and tap tempo, it is particularly comfortable live (quick and repeatable changes), while remaining formidable in the studio for stacking precise and silent textures.
Controls, Presets, and Routing: A Pedal Designed for the Modern Pedalboard
The MD-200 focuses on efficiency: select a mode, immediately adjust RATE, DEPTH, and E. LEVEL, then fine-tune via three PARAM 1/2/3 knobs tailored to the chosen effect. The TAP DIVISION allows you to sync your modulations to the tempo (and visualize the subdivision), while the footswitches handle bypass, preset scrolling, and tap tempo, with the option to reassign them according to your playing style.
Its key feature remains the Insert Loop function: you can insert a drive, compressor, or EQ pedal into the loop and choose modulation treatments pre or post according to the preset. Ideal for getting a more "vintage" phaser before distortion, then switching to a wider chorus after drive for a clean verse, without rewiring anything.
Finally, the MD-200 easily integrates into an advanced setup: external control via footswitch/expression pedal, MIDI on mini TRS jacks to control program changes, and a USB port (system updates).
Sound
The MD-200 offers clean, spacious, and detailed modulation, with excellent definition in attacks and a sense of depth, even in subtle settings. The choruses range from simple "studio" thickening to very enveloping pads; the vibe provides an organic pulse perfect for expressive phrasing; flanger and phaser cover from smooth movement to more pronounced sweeps for rock parts. Tremolo, rotary, and auto wah open very musical territories, while Slicer and Overtone inject a more experimental dimension (cut grooves, enriched harmonics) for modern, ambient, or electro-rock textures.

Questions frequently asked
What modulation effects are available on the Boss MD-200 Modulation?
The 12 modes include chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, rotary, vibe, auto wah, slicer, and overtone. CE-1 Chorus and vibrato tones, as well as a vibe inspired by the Uni-Vibe, are part of the offered colors.
Can the pedal operate in stereo?
The connectivity includes two 6.35 mm jack inputs, INPUT A/MONO and INPUT B, as well as two outputs OUTPUT A/MONO and OUTPUT B. Mono use is still possible via the A/MONO jacks.
How many presets can be saved?
127 user memories are available, in addition to Manual mode. The three-character LED display makes recalling locations easy. The ON/OFF and MEMORY/TAP footswitches manage activation and memory browsing.
How is the Insert Loop on the MD-200 used?
The insert loop allows placing a drive pedal, compressor, or EQ in the signal path. Depending on the selected memory, the modulation can be positioned before or after the inserted effect.
Is it possible to control modulation by tempo and via MIDI?
The TAP DIVISION allows setting rhythmic synchronization and its subdivision. MIDI control is provided by IN and OUT jacks using stereo TRS mini-jacks, while the CTL 1, 2/EXP jack accepts an external footswitch or an expression pedal.
