From the Speaker Cranker to the Special Cranker: the same philosophy, more control

The Special Cranker carries the DNA of the Speaker Cranker and takes the concept further: the same "tube" feel with natural sag, but more available gain, a significantly wider volume reserve, and above all more comprehensive shaping tools. The addition of a tone control and a diode selector allows you to switch from a subtle overdrive that respects your base tone to a more present, edgier drive while maintaining excellent chord clarity.

For which guitarists and styles?

The EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker is aimed at guitarists who want a reliable overdrive pedal to build their sound around the amp without losing the touch or personality of the instrument. It suits both beginners looking for an expressive first overdrive and experienced musicians wanting a consistently musical "crunch" foundation.

Perfect for blues, rock, indie, country, garage, and classic rock, it also works well as a gritty boost in front of distortion or fuzz. In the studio, it adds organic grit and nice density in the mix; live, its generous output level helps you cut through for solos or to "push" the amp's input stage. On a pedalboard, it fits well at the start of the chain (to exploit pickup dynamics) or after a compressor or boost, depending on the desired sound.

Controls, modes, and design: simple but very effective

The Special Cranker gets straight to the point with four controls designed for quick use. The Level knob adjusts output volume, from silence to very high levels, with a unity gain point usually between 10 o'clock and 12 o'clock depending on diode choice. The More knob controls gain by changing the transistor bias: it goes from an almost clean sound to medium gain overdrive, and at max, you can achieve more explosive and intentionally "overbiased" textures depending on your pickups' output. It's normal to hear slight noise when adjusting More, which is related to the circuit's operation.

The diode selector changes feel and tone: in germanium, the attack is softer, rounder, with tamed highs and slightly lower output; in silicon, the response becomes brighter, more modern, with higher output and a sharper sensation. Finally, the Tone control manages high frequencies: it cuts highs when turned left and adds brightness when turned right, with a more "flat" response around 3 o'clock.

The Flexi-Switch (relay switching) combines two behaviors: in latching mode, one press activates the effect and a second press bypasses it; in momentary mode, the effect stays active only while you hold down the footswitch. Since the switching is relay-based, power is required to pass the signal.

Sound

The Special Cranker is an overdrive that focuses on dynamic transparency rather than imposed EQ: it thickens notes, makes harmonics "bloom," and extends sustain with a natural compression feel and slight sag reminiscent of a tube amp. On riffs and power chords, the sound becomes denser, crunchier, with slightly irregular and lively edges; on enriched chords, separation remains very good, as the pedal is designed to avoid "muddiness" in the low end and preserve midrange presence.

In germanium mode, expect a softer overdrive, ideal for blues, roots rhythms, and singing leads. In silicon mode, you get more attack and projection, very effective for modern rock rhythms, sharper solos, or pushing another pedal with a more energetic signal.
